About Me
italki teacher since Apr 18, 2022
I was born in New Zealand and have lived most of my adult life in the United Kingdom and the United States. I can assist with British and American English.
I have worked in diplomatic missions for over 15 years. Through this work I met many people from different countries and cultures and it was one of my favourite things about my job. I hope to continue meeting people through italki.
I love to travel and am currently living in Portugal! I also love to read, cook, sports (mostly watch rather than play myself 😜). I also enjoy discussing current events.
Me as a Teacher
I am interested in learning what a student's personal goals are and how they hope to use English in the future and from this develop a work plan to help achieve those goals.
I have an Associate Teachers degree in Speech and Drama and can provide exercises to assist with pronunciation.
From my time working at Embassies I can offer guidance and practice in conversations focused on networking/ building professional relationships.
My classroom is a safe space. There are no stupid questions. Mistakes are an excellent way to learn! I believe providing a relaxed and fun environment is the most productive way to learn.
My lessons & teaching style
I offer two types of lessons.
The first is conversational lessons as I believe it is the most natural and helpful way to learn a language. We can talk about whatever topics you like. But if you are not sure what you want to discuss I have plenty of conversation-starter questions and activities. As we converse I will make notes of your areas of improvement for us to discuss later rather than interrupting you.
The second lesson is a more structured, made up of various speech exercises to help with those more difficult to pronounce sounds in the English language. For these lessons I draw on my experience as a Speech and Drama teacher.
Having fun and enjoying the lesson is my priority.

Had a great pronunciation lesson with Helen, and I could tell she is very knowledgeable and experienced in teaching how articulators should be positioned in order to sound better and clearer when speaking English. Also, she is very friendly, supportive and patient, and gave me huge encouragement and practical advice on how i can improve.
