About Me

Hello, my name is Tessa and I'm an American English teacher here on Italki! I am a recent graduate of Trinity College in Connecticut, where I majored in Italian Language and Culture Studies and minored in Art History. I had the opportunity to study abroad in Italy as a Junior, and learned the value of conversation in enhancing fluency through my communication with the locals of Rome and Venice. I am very excited to be continuing this journey of understanding when I visit Florence, Tuscany, and Cinque Terre in the Spring! In my spare time, I work as a Pilates instructor in an effort to make positive movement experiences accessible to everyone.

Me as a Teacher

It was my time as a Teacher's Assistant in Italian 102 and Italian 202 classes that sparked my love of helping others learn a new language. I find it rewarding to help individuals connect the puzzle pieces of vocabulary, grammar, and conversation in a way which enables them to communicate confidently with other native speakers. I also worked as a Course Design Assistant while at Trinity - performing literary research, developing an engaging syllabus, and acting as an intermediary between students and professor. The trust a student must have in the teacher in order to make mistakes and be open to building and improving on them is extremely important to me!

My lessons & teaching style

In my opinion, conversation is the foundation of a language's real-world application. For this reason, it serves as the basis to most of my lessons. Conversation typically reveals what a student's strengths are, as well as what areas might need improvement. Therefore, through my own observations and the students' expressions of personal learning goals, I can prepare exercises and future lesson plans which are catered to those particular needs. An emphasis on integrating newly learned concepts into conversation remains the goal of each session together. I look forward to working with you - exploring the English language at whatever level of fluency you bring to the table!
