About Me

Hello! My name is Kern. I was born on the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago and later moved to Grenada with my family. I was born hearing but became deaf due to a disease. I started learning American Sign Language at the age of 13. My favorite sports are cycling, basketball, football (Americans call it soccer) cricket and swimming. I also enjoy being outside in nature.Me as a Teacher
My lessons focus on grammar, vocabulary, handshapes, facial expressions, etc. I help individuals I currently work with learn how to communicate in ASL (previously in a classroom setting and more recently in a more casual environment). When I was a student I most enjoyed classes that were interactive, where the teachers got me involved and excited about learning and helped me to use my imagination. I hope to copy their example and not just state facts, but have interactive classes where students have fun learning.My lessons & teaching style
My lessons will match the goals and abilities of each student, whether you are just starting to learn ASL or you have some knowledge of the language. I encourage a voice off approach. This stimulates visual learning, so you're not dependent on what you hear with your ears, but what you "hear" with your eyes.
We'll have fun while learning natural expressions and conversational style signing.My teaching material
