Gary

I am an advanced Cantonese speaker who has been learning from Gary for close to a year now, and give him my highest recommendation. He is a kind, humorous, patient and passionate teacher whose deep knowledge and love of Cantonese shows through in every lesson. Gary not only raises my language abilities but gives me a better understanding of Hong Kong culture and politics. We have studied a variety of readings, from news articles to literary short stories to social media posts, and Gary is always able to give helpful context for each reading. Sometimes when there is some extra time at the end of a lesson, Gary will show me some Cantonese music videos, which has been a great touch. I feel lucky to have found Gary as a teacher and hope to be able to keep learning from him for a long time.

Gary is a talented boy who adopts effective, comprehensive as well as enjoyable teaching method. During his lesson, not only carefully prepared PPT and fully materials of rich content can be expected, but also a lovely Cantonese music following the 55-min lesson which feigns my interest in learning Cantonese. Personally, I am also a picky student at choosing teachers on italki. If I did not enjoy the lesson or somewhat was not really into the teaching method, the second lesson will never be booked. However, Gary is pretty a nice teacher! I do recommend him to everyone who has already a strong determination in learning Cantonese or just flashes this idea into your mind, Gary くん will definitely be the one for you!

Gary is an awesome teacher!! I have been working with Gary for several months, and he has helped me progressed from zero Cantonese ability to being able to hold basic conversations about daily life. Each lesson is individualized based on the progress that I am making and what my goals in speaking Cantonese are. On top of that, Gary puts a lot of work into his lessons and materials. For example, although he mostly uses Yale romanization with his other students, he teaches me new vocabulary using Jyutping since that was my preference. After every lesson, he sends me a list with all new vocabulary words so I can review before the next lesson. I was also able to learn about Hong Kong culture with Gary through music videos and by talking about Cantonese slang. Taking lessons with Gary is like speaking with a friend, and I can tell he is committed to helping students reach their goals in both Mandarin and Cantonese.
