Exercise: Are Governments Overspending on Weapons QUESTION: Most countries spend a large amount of money in weapons to defend themselves though they are not at war. To the countries it should spend money to help the citizens for whom in the countries are poor and disadvantaged. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (This question isn’t written by me.) ANSWER: It is noticed that in today’s world, there are still a great number of countries that are spending a significant deal of money on weapons for national defence though they are enjoying peace. Some people argue that they should save the money to help those living in poverty. However, I believe whether to spend the money on research and development of powerful weapons or to help the poor depends on a country’s condition. Some countries are in real peace and have few or no enemies while some citizens are extremely impoverished. These countries definitely should give up or reduce their spending on national defence. The reasons for this are obvious. Weapons do no good to their poor citizens. Instead, they cost all citizens a huge amount of resources and laborious working. If such spending can be used to help the needy, their lives are bound to be improved significantly. This will in turn add to the stability and cohesion to the nation. However, there are some countries that are constantly under their enemies’ threat though they are not at war. Though it is never justified to sacrifice the poor for the sake of the army, they have to improve their weapons for national security. This is especially true if once the war breaks out and the country loses, all citizens will be forced to endure brutal foreign exploitation and unspeakable atrocity. Powerful weapons are worth the cost because they make foreign hostilities think twice before breaking the peace. In summary, some countries do not need to invest much money on weapons, because they are not under any threat. Therefore, they should spend more on helping the poor. But some other countries do need to spend a lot on weapons due to the foreign hostilities they face.
