Un Chêne majestueux, grand et puissant, contemple avec pitié un petit Roseau fragile poussant au bord de l'eau. Le Chêne propose au Roseau de l'abriter des coups de vent sous son ombre protective, se moquant poliment de la faiblesse de la plante. Le Roseau remercie le Chêne mais décline son aide, affirmant qu'il ne craint pas le vent car il sait plier sans rompre. Survient alors une tempête d'une violence extrême : le Roseau plie sous la force de l'ouragan, tandis que le Chêne résiste fièrement... jusqu'à ce que le vent redouble de force et déracine le colosse.
