Malayalam Names — Initials, House Names and Why There Are No Surnames | Learn Malayalam #168
Description
You meet a Malayali. Their name is written K. R. Suresh. You ask what the letters stand for and get an answer involving a village, a father and a house. You ask for their surname and get a confused look.
Here is how Kerala names actually work — and it is genuinely different from most naming systems in the world.
Traditionally, Kerala does not use hereditary surnames the way Europe, North India or China do. A full name is built from three elements: the house name, the father's or a parental name, and the person's own given name. The first two are usually reduced to initials.
K. R. Suresh might expand to Kizhakkeveettil Raman Suresh. Kizhakkeveettil is the house. Raman is the father. Suresh is the person. In a state with a great many people named Suresh, the K. R. is the disambiguating information — the initials are not decoration.
Then the part that delights outsiders: വീട്ടുപേര് (veettuperu), the house name.
കിഴക്കേവീട് (kizhakkeveedu) the eastern house
പടിഞ്ഞാറേവീട് (padinjaareveedu) the western house
പുതുവീട് (puthuveedu) the new house
മേലേതിൽ (melethil) the upper one · താഴത്തേതിൽ (thaazhathethil) the lower one
So a person's identifying name is a place. Not a trade, as in Smith and Baker. Not a father, as in Johnson. A house, standing in a particular spot, named for where it stands — the same logic that froze Norwegian farm names into surnames.
In this class:
• How to read, say and ask about initials without causing offence
• House names and what they describe
• Why the system is changing, and what younger Malayalis write instead
