The Malayalam Verb, Completely — One Reference Class | Learn Malayalam #224
Description
A reference class. Everything this course has taught about the Malayalam verb, in one place, in order, so you have one recording to come back to. No cultural content, no story. Just the machine. One verb runs throughout — പോകുക, to go — with കഴിക്കുക, to eat, at each step so you hear it generalise.
THE BASICS
പോകുക · കഴിക്കുക — the -ഉക infinitive, how verbs are listed
പോക് · കഴിക്ക് — the stem, what endings attach to
And throughout: there is NO agreement. One form for I, you, he, she, we, they. No exceptions.
THE TENSES
Present -ഉന്നു: പോകുന്നു — covers both simple and continuous, which English separates and Malayalam does not
Explicitly ongoing -ഉകയാണ്: പോകുകയാണ്
Past -ഇ / -ഉ: പോയി, കഴിച്ചു — this is where irregularity lives, and the common verbs are the irregular ones
Past continuous -ഉകയായിരുന്നു: പോകുകയായിരുന്നു
Future and habitual -ഉം: പോകും — will go, and also goes habitually
Habitual explicitly -ആറുണ്ട്: പോകാറുണ്ട് · negative പോകാറില്ല
Habitual past -ഉമായിരുന്നു: പോകുമായിരുന്നു used to go
Perfect -ഇട്ടുണ്ട്: പോയിട്ടുണ്ട് · negative പോയിട്ടില്ല
THE NEGATIVES — SEPARATE FORMS, NOT A PARTICLE
Present -ഉന്നില്ല: പോകുന്നില്ല · Past: പോയില്ല · Future: പോകില്ല
And the two negative copulas: ഇല്ല negates existence and possession (പൈസ ഇല്ല), അല്ല negates identity (ഞാൻ ഡോക്ടർ അല്ല). Confusing these is a top learner error.
THE IMPERATIVES, AT FOUR LEVELS
പോ bare, to children and close friends only · പോകൂ polite
പോകണം impersonal, it must be done · പോകരുത് do not go · പോകണ്ട no need to go
THE MODALS
എനിക്ക് പോകണം I want to go (-അണം with the dative)
എനിക്ക് പോകാൻ പറ്റും I can go, circumstantially · negative പറ്റില്ല
എനിക്ക് നീന്താൻ അറിയാം I know how to swim, a learned skill · negative അറിയില്ല
പോകാമോ? may I go? · പോകാം let us go
പോയേക്കാം might go · അവൻ വീട്ടിലായിരിക്കും he is probably at home
പോകട്ടെ let him go · ഞാൻ പോകട്ടെ? shall I go?
THE NON-FINITE FORMS — THE MACHINERY OF THE LONG SENTENCE
Converb: പോയി having gone · കഴിച്ചിട്ട് having eaten, and then
Purpose -ആൻ: കാണാൻ വന്നു came to see
Conditional -ആൽ: പോയാൽ if one goes
Temporal -ഉമ്പോൾ: പോകുമ്പോൾ when going
Concessive -ഇട്ടും: പോയിട്ടും even though one went
Negative converb -ആതെ: പോകാതെ without going
Causal -കൊണ്ട്: പോയതുകൊണ്ട് because one went
RELATIVE PARTICIPLES AND NOMINALISATION
പോയ ആൾ the one who went · പോകുന്ന ആൾ the one who goes · പോകാത്ത the one who does not go
-അത് turns a clause into a noun: പോയത്, and ഞാൻ പോയത് ഇന്നലെയാണ് — the focus construction.
CAUSATIVE AND BENEFACTIVE
കഴിപ്പിക്കുക to feed, to make eat · ചെയ്യിപ്പിക്കുക to have something done
പറഞ്ഞു തരുക explain to me · പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുക്കുക explain to another
