Het woord is een samenstelling van ‘zien’ en ‘waardig’. Waardig betekent dat iets de moeite waard is. Iets is zinvol. Een bezienswaardigheid is dus een locatie, bijvoorbeeld een monument, een gebouw of natuur dat vaak door toeristen wordt bezocht. Beter gezegd, bezienswaardigheden zijn meestal plekken die een land of een stad bekend maken. In Frankrijk is dat bijvoorbeeld de Eiffeltoren, in Engeland is dat de Big Ben en in België is dat.. Manneken Pis!
