In this episode we are going to listen to a dialogue about a birthday dinner invitation. How can we invite friends to our birthday dinner? Let's start to listen now.
小林：早上好，小高。
小高：早上好，小林。你这个周末有空吗？ 
小林：我有空，你有什么事吗？ 
小高：这个星期六是7月8日，是我的生日。我想请一些朋友吃晚饭。 
小林：太好了，我一定去！ 小高：你喜欢吃中国菜还是美国菜？ 
小林：中国菜和美国菜我都喜欢吃，但是我最爱吃泰国菜。
小高：我也喜欢吃泰国菜。那我们一起去吃泰国菜怎么样？ 
小林：没问题！我们星期六几点见面？ 
小高：6点可以吗？ 
小林：可以。我们在哪儿见面？ 
小高：你先来我家，然后我们一起去泰国餐馆怎么样？ 
小林：没问题。星期六见！ 
xiǎo lín ： zǎo shàng hǎo ， xiǎo gāo 。 
xiǎo gāo ： zǎo shàng hǎo ， xiǎo lín 。 nǐ zhè gè zhōu mò yǒu kòng ma ？   
 xiǎo lín ： wǒ yǒu kòng ， nǐ yǒu shén me shì ma ？   
 xiǎo gāo ： zhè gè xīng qī liù shì 7 yuè 8 rì ， shì wǒ de shēng rì 。 wǒ xiǎng qǐng yì xiē péng yǒu chī wǎn fàn 。   
 xiǎo lín ： tài hǎo le ， wǒ yí dìng qù ！   xiǎo gāo ： nǐ xǐ huān chī zhōng guó cài hái shì měi guó cài ？  
 xiǎo lín ： zhōng guó cài hé měi guó cài wǒ dōu xǐ huān chī ， dàn shì wǒ zuì ài chī tài guó cài 。 
 xiǎo gāo ： wǒ yě xǐ huān chī tài guó cài 。 nà wǒ men yì qǐ qù chī tài guó cài zěn me yàng ？   
 xiǎo lín ： méi wèn tí ！ wǒ men xīng qī liù jǐ diǎn jiàn miàn ？   
 xiǎo gāo ： 6 diǎn kě yǐ ma ？   
 xiǎo lín ： kě yǐ 。 wǒ men zài nǎ er jiàn miàn ？   
 xiǎo gāo ： nǐ xiān lái wǒ jiā ， rán hòu wǒ men yì qǐ qù tài guó cān guǎn zěn me yàng ？

Scarlet Darkness- Chapter 1

WAITER: Hello, I’ll be your waiter today. Can I start you off with
something to drink?
RALPH: Yes. I’ll have iced tea, please.
ANNA: And I’ll have lemonade.
WAITER: OK. Are you ready to order, or do you need a few minutes?
RALPH: I think we’re ready. I’ll have the tomato soup to start, and the
roast beef with mashed potatoes and peas.
WAITER: How do you want the beef — rare, medium, or well done?
RALPH: Well done, please.
ANNA: And I’ll just have the fish, with potatoes and a salad.


LANGUAGE NOTES
• Can I start you off with something to drink? Notice how the question starts with 
“Can.” Since this is a yes/no question, the intonation rises at the end.
• And I’ll have lemonade. Notice how Anna stresses “I’ll” and “lemonade” to 
emphasize her choice.
• Are you ready to order, or do you need a few minutes? The word “or” signals 
a choice here. Notice the rising intonation on order, and the falling intonation on 
minutes (the first choice is “Are you ready to order?” and the second choice is “Do 
you need a few minutes?”).
• I’ll have the tomato soup to start, and the roast beef with mashed potatoes and
peas. Notice that “tomato soup,” “roast beef,” “mashed potatoes” and “peas” are 
stressed because the food order is the important information here. Notice also that 
“tomato soup,” “roast beef” and “mashed potatoes” are compound words. The stress 
falls on the second word in each phrase.
• Well done, please. Notice that the subject and verb are omitted in the response; only 
the necessary information is given.
• I’ll just have the fish. Anna says “just” here to mean that she does not want a starter.
