Description
Shopping in Malayalam — the shops of a Kerala town, what each one is called, and the sentences that get things bought, stitched, cleaned and repaired without switching to English. Kerala towns are built out of very small shops in a row, each doing one thing. Knowing which door to walk through is half the language. I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken. THE SHOPS കട (kada) - shop കടക്കാരൻ (kadakkaaran) - shopkeeper പലചരക്കുകട (palacharakkukada) - the grocery പച്ചക്കറിക്കട (pachakkarikkada) - the vegetable shop ഇറച്ചിക്കട (irachikkada) - the butcher മീൻകട (meenkada) - the fish market തുണിക്കട (thunikkada) - the cloth shop ചായക്കട (chaayakkada) - the tea shop തയ്യൽക്കട (thayyalkkada) - the tailor THE MONEY SENTENCES എത്രയാണ്? (ethrayaanu?) - how much is it? ഇത് എത്രയാണ്? (ithu ethrayaanu?) - how much is this? കുറയ്ക്കാമോ? (kuraykkaamo?) - can you reduce it? വേണം (venam) - I want it വേണ്ട (venda) - no, not wanted ഒരു കിലോ തരൂ (oru kilo tharoo) - give me a kilo ബാക്കി (baakki) - the change GETTING THINGS FIXED നന്നാക്കുക (nannaakkuka) - to repair നന്നാക്കാമോ? (nannaakkaamo?) - can you fix it? തയ്ക്കുക (thaykkuka) - to stitch അലക്കുക (alakkuka) - to wash clothes എപ്പോൾ കിട്ടും? (eppol kittum?) - when will it be ready? എത്ര ദിവസം? (ethra divasam?) - how many days? THE PATTERN THAT UNLOCKS ALL OF IT Verb + ആമോ (aamo) turns any verb into a polite request. Learn it once and you can ask for anything in any shop in Kerala. Which shop would you walk into first? Tell me in the comments and I will give you the exact sentence. #LearnMalayalam #Malayalam #Kerala
