Malayalam Pronouns 2 — My, Your, Their, and This vs That
Description
Possessives and demonstratives share one logic in Malayalam, so they are taught together.
A Malayalam possessive is just the pronoun plus one ending: -ഉടെ after a vowel, -ന്റെ after a consonant. Match it to respect, gender and number, and remember that അവരുടെ is the respectful 'his' or 'her'. Then the demonstratives, built on one opposition: ഇ for near, അ for far. From that one pair you can predict here and there, like this and like that, now and then. You also find out why അവൻ (he) is really a pointing word.
Words and phrases in this class:
എന്റെ (ente) – my
നിന്റെ (ninte) – your (intimate)
നിങ്ങളുടെ (ningalude) – your (respectful)
അവരുടെ (avarude) – their; his or her (respectful)
നമ്മുടെ (nammude) – our (including you)
ഞങ്ങളുടെ (njangalude) – our (not yours)
ആരുടെ പുസ്തകം ആണ് ഇത്? (aarude pusthakam aanu ithu?) – whose book is this?
അമ്മയുടെ വീട് (ammayude veedu) – mother's house
ഇത് (ithu) – this
അത് (athu) – that
ഇവിടെ (ivide) – here
അവിടെ (avide) – there
ഇങ്ങനെ (ingane) – like this
In this class:
