To unite their teams behind a new direction, they must craft a clear, compelling narrative.

Storytelling is a potent tool for inspiring action and connecting with people on a deeper level. It helps articulate the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of change, making the abstract tangible and the future vivid.

The article presents a four-step approach to effective storytelling in leadership:

Deep Understanding, Simple Description: Leaders must deeply understand the change to communicate it simply. John Legere’s transformation of T-Mobile into an “un-carrier” is a prime example of conveying a complex change with a single, powerful word.
Honoring the Past: Leaders should acknowledge the organization’s strengths and history, showing respect for the past while guiding towards the future. This builds trust and eases the transition for those resistant to change.
Articulate a Persuasive Mandate for Change: Leaders need to present a clear vision that motivates and aligns with the organization’s values, addressing both the positive and negative aspects of the past.
Lay Out a Rigorous and Optimistic Path Forward: The narrative should be action-oriented, providing a clear roadmap for change while maintaining an optimistic outlook.
In summary, leaders must master storytelling to effectively lead change, balancing respect for the past with a clear vision for the future. By doing so, they can capture the hearts and minds of their employees, fostering a culture of optimism and honesty.

2年間コロナで止まっていた日本への入国がようやく再開されました。日本語学校で留学生たちは日本語の勉強を頑張っています。そんなある日の授業風景をお話しします。
Entry to Japan has finally been resumed after two years. Foreign students are doing their best to study Japanese at a Japanese language school. I will tell you about the scene of a class on a day.

「入国再開！ようこそ日本へ！」
今日は、留学生たちが日本にぞくぞくと到着していることをお話します。
この2年間　留学生たちは　日本に入国することができませんでした。理由は、もちろん、コロナです。でも、それが今年、2022年の4月末ごろから、突然、入国できるようになりました。今、ぞくぞくと　留学生たちが日本に到着しています。私がつとめている日本語学校も学生たちでにぎやかになりました。
　私も久しぶりに日本語学校で授業をすることになりました。私の担当は、初級クラスです。学生が1クラスに20人います。　かんたんなことばで　ゆっくり話せば、日本語でコミュニケーションができるレベルです。
　先日、授業で「のに」という文法が出てきました。　「のに」は、「熱があるのに、学校に行く」「日曜日なのに、仕事をします」のように使います。　この「のに」の意味や接続、どんなときに使うかなどを、クラスみんなで確認しました。そのあと、私は学生たちに「のに」をつかって、文を書いてもらいました。
　ひとりの学生がにこにこ笑っているので、私は「書けたのかな」と思い、彼のところに行きました。そして、彼が書いた文を読みました。
「日本語はとてもむずかしくて大変なのに、ぼくはどうして日本語を勉強しているんだろう。」と書かれていました。私は彼の顔を見て、いっしょに笑ってしまいました。
「ほんどだね。日本語、難しいよね。」と私が言うと、周りの学生たちも「うんうん」と大きくうなずいていました。　彼らは、そう言いながらも、なんだかとても楽しそうでした。きっと、「日本語は難しいけれど、おもしろい」と思ってくれているのだと思います。
私は日本人ですから、日本語で　話す、聞く、読む、書くことは　簡単にできます。でも、実は、日本語を教えることは「むずかしい」と思っています。なぜなら、私たち日本人が国語として勉強してきた日本語と　外国語として教える日本語はちょっと違うからです。　たぶん、自分たちのことばを　その構造やどんな文法でどんな接続かなどを考えながら話す人はいないと思います。
ですから、教えるために日本語を　勉強しなおさなければなりませんでした。それはとてもむずかしかったです。私も思いました。「日本語を教えるのはこんなにむずかしいのに、なんで　私は日本語の先生になろうと思ったのだろう」と。
でも、今　日本語の先生をしていて、とても楽しいです。大変だけど楽しいです。世界中のいろいろな国の人たちと　日本語でコミュニケーションを取ることができるからです。

私はずっと関西の街中に住んでたから、引っ越しで富山（とやま）に6年住んだときは、外国に行ったみたいだった。大雪も初めてなら、湿気で洗濯物が乾かなくて、乾燥機を買いに走ったのも、今となっては、いい思い出です。「大自然」を実感したのは、あそこ。今に続く「魚食い」になったのも、あそこです。最近、富山のニュースで、わくわくするようなお知らせを見つけました。「黒部宇奈月（うなづき）キャニオンルート」の運行開始です。
