LOS AZTECAS.

Uno de los grupos indígenas mexicanos más conocidos es el formado por los aztecas. En realidad, se trata de muchas tribus individuales, principalmente de habla nahuatl, que reconocen su origen en el mítico lugar de Aztlán. El grupo más poderoso de los aztecas era el Mexica. Al parecer, se trasladaron al Valle de México después de que su dios, Huitzilopochtli, les ordenase cambiar de emplazamiento en el siglo XIII. Se cree que otras 16 tribus indígenas emigraron de su tierra natal a esta zona de México donde se encontraba el Imperio Azteca.

Siendo uno de los últimos pueblos indígenas en llegar al Valle de México, los mexicas encontraron que toda la buena tierra estaba ya ocupada. Se vieron obligados a seguir buscando su propio lugar hasta que finalmente encontraron una pequeña isla en un lago del valle, que luego se convertiría en el famoso asentamiento azteca de Tenochtitlán. Los mexicas se hicieron expertos en el desarrollo de su país de origen, lo que les ayudó a elevar su posición en la escala social y política del Imperio Azteca, así como los matrimonios mixtos con otras tribus.
