Pie in the sky
Description
Liam sat in the café, staring at his empty cup of coffee.
“I’m going to quit my job,” he said, smiling confidently. “Next month, my podcast will make me famous. Millions of followers. Sponsorships. Easy money.”
His friend Maya raised an eyebrow. “You’ve recorded only three episodes!”
Liam said “But success is coming.”
Maya laughed gently. “Dreaming is great,” she said, “but that sounds a bit pie in the sky. Why not keep your job and grow the podcast slowly?”
Liam paused. He looked at his empty cup again.
“Yeah,” he admitted, “maybe I should start with filling this cup first.”
They smiled—and ordered another coffee.
Idiom: “pie in the sky”
Meaning:
An idea, plan, or promise that sounds great but is unrealistic or unlikely to ever happen.
That's a nice dream but probably not happening.
It comes from the idea of wanting a delicious pie way up in the sky—you can see it, imagine it, but you can’t actually get it.
Example
He talks about becoming a millionaire overnight, but that’s just pie in the sky.
