Many leaders struggle to strike the balance between friendliness and firmness. One client, let's call her Sarah, excelled in collaboration but found her team didn't take her directives seriously. Her challenge? Assertive communication.

Over 12 weeks, we embarked on a journey to transform Sarah's communication style. Our bi-weekly coaching sessions (Mondays for planning, Fridays for review) provided structure and accountability. Here's how we achieved results:

Unveiling the Power of "I" Statements:  Instead of accusatory "you" statements ("You always miss deadlines!"), we practiced "I" statements ("I feel frustrated when deadlines are missed"). This shifted the focus to the impact on Sarah and the team, fostering collaboration.

Body Language Bootcamp:  Nonverbal cues speak volumes. We practiced confident posture, strong eye contact, and clear gestures. Standing tall while giving instructions and mirroring team members' positive body language fostered a sense of mutual respect.

The Art of the Pause:  Sarah often rushed through instructions, leaving room for confusion. We mastered the power of the pause. Strategic pauses after key points allowed information to sink in and empowered team members to ask clarifying questions.

Innovation in Role-Playing:  Traditional role-playing can feel awkward. We gamified the process, creating scenarios based on Sarah's real-life situations. This playful approach allowed Sarah to experiment with assertive language in a safe space, boosting her confidence.

Celebrating Small Wins:  Progress wasn't always linear. We celebrated even minor victories, like delivering a firm but respectful instruction. Acknowledging her achievements fueled Sarah's motivation and helped her stay on track.

The Result? Measurable Change: Within three months, Sarah's communication transformed. Team meetings became more focused, deadlines were met consistently, and her leadership presence flourished.

El león y el ratón

Había una vez un león que estaba durmiendo. Un ratón comenzó a correr sobre su cuerpo y lo despertó. El león, enfadado, atrapó al ratón con su gran garra. El ratón le suplicó al león que lo dejara ir, prometiéndole que algún día le devolvería el favor. El león, riéndose, lo dejó ir. Más tarde, el león fue atrapado en una red por unos cazadores. El ratón escuchó sus rugidos de ayuda y corrió para liberarlo, royendo la cuerda de la red. El león comprendió entonces que incluso los más pequeños pueden ayudar a los más grandes.

Questo fine settimana Jimmy è voluto andare a Milano per un paio di giorni. Milano e Venezia sono abbastanza vicine, quindi si può viaggiare in treno. Venerdì pomeriggio Jimmy è arrivato alla stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia (questo è il nome della stazione) con un piccolo bagaglio. Il bagaglio sono le borse e le valigie con cui partiamo. È andato subito in biglietteria per comprare il biglietto del treno.

Il bigliettaio, cioè la persona che vende i biglietti, gli ha chiesto: “buongiorno, desidera?” Jimmy ha risposto “vorrei un biglietto per andare a Milano, per cortesia.”

“Quando desidera partire?” ha domandato il bigliettaio.

“Subito” ha detto Jimmy. “Vorrei partire con il primo treno.”

“Facciamo un biglietto andata e ritorno?” ha chiesto di nuovo l’impiegato.

Jimmy non sapeva il significato di “biglietto andata e ritorno”. Allora il signore della biglietteria glielo ha spiegato: “il biglietto di andata e ritorno è un biglietto unico per partire e per tornare.” Jimmy ha capito: “sì, adesso capisco. Facciamo andata e ritorno. Vorrei tornare a Venezia domenica sera.” 
Il bigliettaio ha fatto un’altra domanda: “vuole viaggiare con un treno regionale, un intercity o con il treno ad alta velocità?”

Jimmy non capiva di nuovo! “Mi scusi, qual è la differenza?”

Il bigliettaio glielo ha spiegato: “Il treno regionale è un treno molto lento che fa tutte le fermate ed è anche il più economico. Il treno intercity fa solo le fermate delle città più grandi e ha un prezzo medio. Il treno ad alta velocità viaggia a 200 km orari e fa solo 2 o 3 fermate. È velocissimo ma è anche il più costoso.”

Jimmy ha scelto subito: “vorrei viaggiare con il treno ad alta velocità perché voglio arrivare in fretta.” Il bigliettaio ha stampato i biglietti e li ha dati a Jimmy. “Sono 60 euro in totale. Il treno parte dal binario numero 10 fra 15 minuti. Arrivederci.” Jimmy ha pagato, ha salutato, ha preso i bagagli ed è andato verso il binario 10 per salire sul treno per Milano.
