Who’s Chang Suk Hoon? The first time I came across Chang Suk Hoon (a.k.a. Byung Un) was through his cover of IU & Seotaiji’s “Sogyeokdong.” In this YouTube video, Chang Suk Hoon wears a neck pillow on top of his head (...) against the backdrop of a lame chroma key background. Worse, he doesn’t even look like a “cool” artist but rather an engineering student here. So, I was wondering, ‘Who’s this guy…?' But then, he starts singing composedly in his medium-low tone. And my thoughts quickly changed to, ‘Damn, who’s this guy?!’ 😳
Simply speaking, Chang Suk Hoon, born in 1991, is a Korean singer-songwriter & rapper who had lived outside Korea (mostly in Canada) for over 20 years. In 2015, he started gaining traction among music fans when he uploaded an acoustic cover of Keith Ape’s “It G Ma." (This grotesque YouTube cover has attracted more than one million views.) Afterwards, he joined a Korean hip-hop crew named Balming Tiger and started featuring in many different local artists, popularizing his name in the scene. And in Dec. 2018, he signed with Starship Entertainment, the music label behind K-pop acts like Monsta X and K.Will. According to his Instagram post, it looks like he recently finished his mandatory military service.
Turns out, he is the Chang Suk Hoon from The Quiett’s “hangang gang,” which is one of my favorite tracks. 🤣 In this hip-hop track, his classic folk singer-like vibe shines, and I love it. Moreover, in the YouTube video featuring his songwriting session with The Quiett, you can watch him coming up with the beautiful chorus while singing along to his guitar. Yeah, that’s when I realized that he is not only a great singer but also an ingenious songwriter.
