1: Correct 2: It means: Both of you being equally difficult, may indeed have make things work, up to the moment when it no longer did. IE, until it didn't work any more. Until... = Up to the moment when... For example: I will keep running until I get tired = I will keep running up to the moment when I get tired = I will keep running but I will stop when I get tired.

goes sideways -when things do not turn out / or go as planned. Until it didn't. - the difficulty between the two did not interfere in their friendship, until one day it did.
