Fifty years ago, the UAE was a quite poor country. Its infrastructure was
undeveloped. For example, there were no streets around the country. The economy depended on
pearls, fishing and agriculture, but starting with the discovery of oil in 1966, the
ruler of the UAE, Zayed bin Sultan, literally changed everything, particularly
the country’s infrastructure. He hired workers from all over the world to build housing along with extra apartments [so they could thrive - meaning unlear]. Sheikh Zayed was
known for his hospitality, his tolerance, and his love for his country and people.
Originally, people used to rent camels
to travel from a city to another, but since the 2000s, the transportation system has
completely changed. The UAE’s public transportation is now one of the best
transportations worldwide. People in Dubai use trains and taxis to commute to work. Taxis are quite cheap and comfortable. In 1971, when
the seven Emirates joined together, there were no skyscrapers, but just 50 years
after the union, the UAE built the tallest skyscraper in the world along with other wonderful skyscrapers that skydivers can jump from.
