I was told I should only use “run away from” when you are trying to escape something on foot. In this case, what verb could I use to mean someone is trying to escape someone else in a car, eg, in a police chase?

Would it sound odd to say “running away from” in the example below?

“You know that car that just sped by us one minute ago. IT ( OR he/she??) was running away from the police”

In that sentence, it would be correct. However, it's most common in the first situation (because running is an activity done on foot).

Also, if you don't know a gender/are referring to someone non-binary (who chooses those pronouns), you would say THEY not IT. Eg: They are running. He is running.
