How do you pronounce "Are you tired?" Would you be more likely to say "ɑː juː taɪəd" or "ə jə taɪəd"?

That depends—do you want to sound British, or American? Add your R's to the second option, and you will have a perfect American accent.

I would say "ɑː jə taɪəd", "æ jə taɪəd" or "ə jə taɪəd", depending on how quickly I said it. I have northern England vowel sounds, and I think it could be pronounced quite differently in other parts of the world. "ɑː juː taɪəd" sounds like you're emphasising the you - as if you're surprised by this or something.

I don't know how to write it in that way, but I would say it's pronounced like Tie (as in 'necktie') + ould (as in 'could'). Put it into Google Translate to hear the audio - that's usually quite accurate, but it might come with an American accent.

"Tired" is pronounced with the long "i" sound. Also, notice the intonation of my voice. When you ask a "yes/no" question, your voice will go up at the end. ⤴️ Let me know if you have any questions. Teacher Dani 🌷
