Because you’re talking about your morning. It makes sense to sequence the routine (work up late, ate breakfast, did homework).
In English it’s common to use “did homework” you can “study for a test” or “study grammar” but often study is used for a specific topic or something done in anticipation of a future date. Just like you used with French and English!
The however is unclear about the preceding issue. I added here, guessing at the meaning. But however generally used when something was meant to happen, but something else happened.
