Tuteur communautaireStruggling with the Spanish past tense? The easiest way to understand the difference between ESTUVE (Preterite) and ESTABA (Imperfect) is to think of a dot and a line.
šµ ESTUVE = The Dot (Preterite)
Think of it as a snapshot.
Completed Action: It has a specific beginning and end.
Example: Ayer estuve en la biblioteca. (I was at the library, and the action is completely finished).
š ESTABA = The Open Line (Imperfect)
Think of it as a video.
Ongoing Action: It describes the background scene or a habit without a definitive end.
Example: Estaba en la biblioteca cuando... (I was at the library... setting up a scene in progress).
ā” The Intersection
When telling a story, these tenses work together! ESTABA (The Line) sets the background scene, while ESTUVE (The Dot) is the specific action that interrupts it.
