What is the etymology of the word fortnight? Neither in Russian nor in German (languages that are the most popular to learn in schools in Russia) not in other languages there is such a word for two weeks? So, does this word have some interesting etymology? Why on the Earth two weeks are called FORT_NIGHT (if fort is a fortress and night is when it's dark)

According to a dictionary, it comes from the Old English way of saying fourteen nights: "fēowertīene niht".
