"Japan is east of China."
It means the same thing as "Japan is to the east of China."

Or you could also say, Japan is situated in the Eastern part of China.☺️

No, you need the word “to.” If I say “Japan is the east of China,” that means EVERYTHING to the east of China is Japan. By putting “to,” you’re saying that that’s only one of the places to the East. Hope that helps!
