I was reading 'The Queen's Gambit' and there was thise phrase: Senator Kennedy’s picture was on the cover of Time and Newsweek: he was running for President and probably wouldn’t make it because he was a Catholic. What is (or was) wrong with being a catholic?

Howdy Anastasia, there was a time in American history not too long ago when Catholics were discriminated against for their religion. This was partly a result of the prejudice and fear people had in response to immigrants from Ireland and Italy. John F. Kennedy was the first Catholic president in the country’s history. The current president, Joe Biden, is also Catholic. So things are definitely different these days. However some Protestant denominations do continue to be hesitant to accept Catholics as “real” Americans.
