The <em>pretérito anterior</em> can still occasionally be found in some literary texts, indicating what took place directly before another action in the past, for exemple:

Nuestro amado Señor, después que nos hubo dado todo lo que tenía, renunciando a su vida por nosotros, se deshizo del torrente

Our dear Lord, when He had given us all He had, and even resigned His life on our behalf, then parted with a priceless stream

We always use the past perfect when we are telling a story (in the simple past) and then want to look back at something that happened earlier.

Mi marido me había puesto un impermeable grueso, me había dado un paraguas y me había empujado hacia la calle.

My husband had put a heavy raincoat on me, had handed me an umbrella, and had pushed me out the door.

Hola Joel

La frase "Había dado" se usa muy poco en realidad en el español.

EJEMPLO:

--Yo te había dado un regalo ayer.

--El te había dado una caja color roja.

Esta frase se refiere a una acción pasada pero sin estar completamente seguro. Sin embargo, Es mejor usar la frase afirmativa directa como:

--Yo te di un regalo ayer.

--El te dio una caja color roja

Así la oración es afirmativa y se refiere al pasado.

Sobre tu segunda duda. La frase Hube dado no existe. No se usa en el español.

Entonces, are you guys saying that PRETERITE PERFECT is almost never used? Thanks for all your comments. Or just this instance of HUBE DADO....

I just want to add that, like Colton said, you would never use it. It definitely exists, but it is one of those strange obscure conjugation that is not really used. If you do find it, it will most likely be in literary Spanish.
