Best Methods for Learning New Vocabulary

Hi, I was wanting to hear from other learners about their favorite/most useful methods for learning lots of vocabulary. I find that my biggest obstacle in my Spanish is vocabulary. Do you prefer to read (if so what types of media), memorize with flashcards or quizlet, etc.

I'm used to writing down new vocabulary and create sentences with new words. It's really helpful

I think that at some point it's necessary to write down and memorize the basics of a language. however for me, the best way to learn new vocabulary and to be more comfortable with dealing with new words in the middle of a sentence, was to read books and to watch movies with subtitles (and even without when you feel like you can do it or when it's a movie without too much complex dialogs)

I think the most important thing is context. I find if I am trying to learn a word if I google and  read it in context a few places, or immediately try to use it in a conversation it sticks longer. I also try to think of 3 sentences with it because I read a study that 3 uses of a word in a real context makes you more likely to remember it. It sounds dumb, but I have remembered the words better. I do use Memrise sometimes though.

As a teacher I make lessons where we look at the vocabulary that will come up in a reading or listening activity and get the students to discuss the meaning, then to look up the meaning and then to use it in their own example. Then when you hear the listening or see it in the reading it really cements the word in your mind and stays there.

To replicate this for myself when I'm too poor to hire a teacher, I skim through a reading activity or the transcript of the listening I'm gonna do to see any unfamiliar words and explore them before I start reading and I kind of copy my own lesson plan but for myself, all alone.

Then, in addition, I try to use that word the next day too, work it into conversation. 

Really, for me, what really works is the discussion of what the word might mean and then the looking up and discussing what it actually means that makes it stuck in my head, so it sucks when I can't have a class, but I can replicate it kind of by journal entries or vlogs, talking to myself and stuff.
