I thought I would start a discussion where we play the game "would you rather." I think this is a great game to practice a language and to learn new words and phrases. The game is very simple. I ask a question that has two options and you have to pick one of them and explain as best you can as to why you chose that option. I'll start
Would you rather be trapped in a coffin for 24-48 hours or be covered in scorpions for as long as it takes for you to break free?
vuoi piuttosto essere incastrato in una bara per 24 (venti quattro) - 48 (quarantotto) ore, o essere coperto con tanti scorpioni per tutto il tempo che prendi per scappare?

covered with scorpions works because one substance is simply ontop of another substance.
Covered by scorpions only works in this case if
1 - you mean to say that the amount of scorpions is so much that you can't see the person
and if that's the case, I definitely don't want to be covered BY scorpions. Ha ha.

it all depends on what you want to convey.
covered by - something is covering or protecting something else so that you can't see the object
ex: the window is covered by a curtain. This means the curtain is opaque (can't see through the curtain). So I can't see the window through the curtain
ex: the persons face is covered by a helmet. This means I cannot see the persons face at all.
ex: I am covered by an umbrella this means the umbrella is protecting me from the rain or in some cases people use an umbrella to protect them (cover them) from the sun
covered with - in some cases can be used in the same way as "by"
ex: the window is covered with a curtain. However, this does not mean I cannot see the window. The curtain COULD be see through, which means I can still see the window.
The difference between "by" and "with"
"by" = one substance is covering another substance to the point of being concealed (you cannot see the item being covered)
"with" = one substance is covering another substance, but does not ALWAYS mean that the substance being covered cannot be seen.
covered in - this simply means that a little or a lot of one substance is either on or sticking to another object but not concealing the object.
ex
i am covered in blood. This means that I could have a little blood on me. Or I could be covered head to toe in blood. However no matter what you can still see me.
however if you were to say "I am covered by blood" this can only mean that the blood is somehow protecting me from something else, because you can still see me
and you could say "I am covered with blood" because one substance is covering another substance.
I'd rather be covered with scorpions (in appropriate clothes haha), because I am scared of being stuck and not be able to move...and I love animals, any kind!
