Every Sunday I teach online classes about Polish idioms on Instagram and Facebook (Polski Daily). Today I hosted a class on idioms coming from tales and local stories.

I'll give you a sample:

NIEDŹWIEDZIA PRZYSŁUGA

lit. bear’s favor

meaning: a poisoned gift, a favour which causes more harm than use

story: There was a bear who befriended a hermit. They lived next to each other peacefully. One day a fly sat on hermit’s forehead. The bear wanted to chase the fly away and he hit the hermit on the head killing him.

bajka: Był sobie niedźwiedź, który zaprzyjaźnił się z pustelnikiem. Mieszkali obok siebie w pokoju. Pewnego dnia mucha usiadła na czole pustelnika. Niedźwiedź chciał ją przepędzić i uderzył pustelnik w głowę, zabijając go.

We have it in Russian as well. We just have "miedwiezia" for "bear's" and "u-" instead of "przy-".

Dziękuje, Paulina! Zgadzam się - polskie frazeologizmy/idiomy sąn
bardzo subtelne i głębokie. Na przykład - "wpaść jak po ogień" - alarmowy stopień szybkości akcji nie daje się lepiej określić..)
