Could VS Was able to?

I'll be very happy if you can help me understand the difference between "Could" and "Was able to".
Let's imagine the next situation. Peter's friends were coming to his city and he had to meet them at the airport.
Situation one: Peter woke up on time, went to the airport and met his friends as they agreed. So we say:
1) Peter was able to meet his friends at the airport.
Situation two: Peter overslept and by the time he reached the airport, his friends had gone to the hotel by taxi. So we say:
2) Peter could meet his friends at the airport.
Could you please tell me if I correctly understand the difference between "Could" and "Was able to" in positive sentences in the past tense and if my explanations above are right?
