Frustrated?

Struggling, unfortunate, having tough time, going through hard times, going through hardships……

A person like this is can be described as: troubled. "Troubled" is a good word because it can be used for a person who has a hard life because of things they don't have control over (bad luck or other people harming them) OR things that they're personally doing wrong (making bad decisions). It's a "nice" word to describe the bad situation and neutral in judgment. If this person was always making bad choices on their own, we'd call them "a screwup." But that's really a judgmental word.
