There's no way I can make it to fluency ( Part two of my language journey)
It seemed to be working. I understood more. And the more I understoood the more I wanted to know about this language. But that one particular day made all the difference. I had agreed to meet up a friend from Turkey.I was both thrilled and nervous. Because I was going to use what I had learnt to commucinate with my friend!
As we sat down with our ice creams and fries, my friend started asking my plans about the upcoming summer holiday. ( I was in the first year of college at the time.) I understood what he was saying, but I had no idea how to describe my plans in English to him, so I started translated my plans from Chinese into English. I stammered a few words here and there hoping that he would understand. He looked confused and suggested using Google translate if it was to difficult for me.
When I got back to school, I started contemplating what had gone wrong. What part of my language learning methods had gone wrong resulting my inability to speak? There's no way to make it to fluency if I continue using my methods.
I went online to see if there's any information that I could use. There it was! An video explaining how to be fluent in your target language. After watching the video, I realized I had made a major mistake. I had simply been memorizing and matching some Chinese/English terms. Whenever I saw English words, I thought about their Chinese meaning, and whenever I tried to speak in English I went blank. This obiviously wasn't going to get me anywhere.
After I had done some research about language learning, I decided to learn English all in English instead of in Chinese. I had already had some basic vocabulary under my belt, surely it wasn't going to be difficult to learn English with my already-existed English vocabulary.

Just sharing my experience learning Chinese. Memorising vocabulary words in isolation (word--> meaning in native language) did not work well for me either. It encouraged me to translate in my head. It is also easy to forget the word. Even if I remembered the meaning, when the time came that I needed to use the word, I didn't know how to string it together in a sentence. It took me months before I realised it was not working and changed my method.
Now when I come across a new and useful word in Chinese, I will learn the whole sentences in Chinese and its meaning in English. I write the sentence in English and practice saying out the whole sentence which includes the new word without looking at the Hanzi and Pinyin. After I say it, then I read the Hanzi or Pinyin to see if I got it right. So far, this is the best method for me. If my Chinese is better, maybe I will try your method too.
