One Band One Sound | Euphonium I play Euphonium. Every time I tell people what I play in orchestra, they will ask, what is a euphonium? It is difficult to describe it. I usually say it is like a baby Tuba. Tuba? What’s that? Don’t say that you do not know this musical instrument. It is the most famous instrument among the others. It holds the title of biggest musical instrument in an orchestra band. So, Euphonium is a little bit smaller then it. Back to the main question, what it is actually a Euphonium? It is actually a musical instrument which built with valves that need to be press to produce different kind of note when been blew. As a wind orchestra member, every year our aim is to get qualified for finale and win the overall competition. It is easy to say but to achieve it, it’s not that easy. Every year, me and other band members will sacrifice money, energy and time in order to achieve what we aim for. Sometime, we have to sleep late to finish our homework. There is no time for joy. Maybe for those who are not in the band will simply say that life as a band member as easy as ABC, but it is totally not true. It is the road not taken for us as a band member to choose this path because once you enter or register as a member, there is no turning back. You cannot simply enter and quit the band as easy as you can do to the other society. This society is more than just a group of people who can play a musical instrument; it is actually needs someone who has determination and teamwork. Without these two important values, this society will absolutely cannot achieve its aim. Every year, around May or June, there will be a Wind Orchestra Competition that will be held in one of the selected boarding school around Malaysia. It is actually a very exciting moment for us. It is not only about the music, it is the battle of dignity for each of the band that competes in the competition. Every band, not only our band will probably hold these words as the key to build a good orchestra team. It is “One band, one sound”. The true meaning of these words are, although you play different types of musical instrument that produce different kind of sound; it is not consider as a band unless you can produce sound that blend together and balance. As a result, a harmony sound can be produced. That is called a band.
