Question about Russian pronounciation? "о" sound in Russian...I'm confused? это is pronounced like "eta" but I thought the "o" sound was always "oh" and words like компьютер have this sound for the "o" Can someone tell me why there are two different sounds for one letter? which sound am I supposed to make? the "oh" or "ah" sound? Я не знаю, как объяснить так. извините

Я не знаю, как объяснить  так на русском языке.

Буква "о" в русском языке звучит по разному, например:

в слове компью'тер - при естественном звучании произношение буквы "о" похоже на английский [ ɔ ]

в слове ко'мната - произношение буквы "о" похоже на английский [ ɔ: ]

(' - означает ударение в слове)

If accent on "o", like "лОшадь", "гОрод", "пОлка", U read like "oh". If accent on another letter - red like "ah". It's simply.

In common Russian (not in any dialect) stressed "o" is always pronounced like "oh", and not stressed - almost always like "ah". There are a lot of exceptions which we call "dictionary words" and remember them from childhood. ;)
