Asking for Leave
TASK DESCRIPTION:
You are studying overseas. You need to return to your country before the end of the semester for a family event. Write a letter to your supervisor. In your letter:
• Request time off
• Explain why you need to leave early
• Reassure him / her that your studies will not suffer
MY LETTER:
Date
Dear Mr Johnson, or Dr Johnson, [ you need to address your supervisor formally, when you write this type of letter as it will go on your file]
I’m writing to you to make a formal request for two week's leave, as from next Monday, July 29th. [be specific]
I need this time off because I have to travel back to Shanghai, my home city, to attend my sister’s wedding ceremony. As I told the class in the discussion that followed your last English lecture, the wedding ceremony is very important to the Chinese. As a brother, I will be required to share some of the duties during the event. [ 'happiness' sounds vague and it is not a legitimate reason]
I know that you might think that this time off, is bound to have a negative effect on my studies. However, I promise that I’ll spare no effort during the holidays to catch up with my study. As the end of term exam approaches, I’ll do my best to review what I’ve learned, especially in English, as I recieved a fail in last term’s writing test. At the same time, I’ve asked Peter my roommate, to record all the lectures that I’ll miss, so that I can listen to them afterwards.
I hope that you will grant me my request and once again, I apologize for not being able to attend your lectures.
Yours sincerely,
Melaminefree
