English word is used in Brazil with different meaning - 'Gringo'

Some Americans feel angry when some Brazilian calls them Gringo. But this word has a different meaning here. In Brazil, the word 'gringo' means foreigner. It doesn't matter where you from (It's a slang).
A Brazilian that had contact with Mexico told me , the word Gringo was used by Mexicans when Americans conquered the Mexican lands (region of California,Texas) . Mexican people said "Gringo!! Gringo !! (Green go!!!) to send off the american soldies from the villages , soldiers used green clothes.
Sometimes this term is used to insult a American.
I believe this term "gringo" arrived in Brazil because the western films . We associate this word with foreigner.
