“Their relationship was doomed from the beginning” Extremely tense, mad, absolutely amoral, strong, hard – it’s impossible to describe the relations between Lolita and Humbert in widely-known, maybe, the most popular Vladimir Nabokov’s novel “Lolita”. From the beginning of the novel which is told from the first person – Humbert, the reader understands that it will be about the fatal love of the main character. Humbert is an English literature teacher had a tragic childhood love that traumatized him and made him feel obsessed with “nymphets”, young girls who possess a mysterious seductive power. When he meets Lolita his life changes. Lolita is a 12-years old girl that represents exact picture that Humbert had been carrying in his mind during all those years of trying to overcome his odd sexual obsession for young girls. He marries Charlotte Haze, her mother, just to be closer to her, and after Charlotte’s death in an accident he takes Lolita for the journey around the country. Humbert that should have control over a little girl understands that he has become completely obsessed with Lolita and she can manipulate him to obtain whatever she wants. He becomes mad at some point – he is interested in nothing except Lolita. He doesn’t want the girl to socialize with other people, but Lolita makes him let her go to school. Their relationships become more and more strained: Humbert envies the girl, accuses her of being unfaithful, threatens to put her in an orphanage if she doesn’t comply with his sexual demands. Humbert feels afraid of being accused of involving the girl in this socially inacceptable relationship and gets more and more suspicious. He notes a strange man that has an interest in their relations and he decides to leave for the next trip. The man follows them and Humbert suspects Lolita to be in contact with him. Lolita becomes ill, and Humbert must take her to the hospital. However, when Humbert returns to get her, the nurses tell him that somebody has already picked her up. He finds her again in 2 years, married and pregnant. He wants her to be back, but she refuses. Humbert departs. After getting to know that she dies in childbirth, he dies of heart failure. The novel ends with the deaths of the main characters, leaving no doubt, that this relationship between a young girl and man was a definitely doomed one that completely changed and destroyed their lives.
