Draco

Draco, the Athenian legislator, provided only one punishment for his extremely harsh laws--death. This punishment for insignificant violations and grave crimes was perfected in Athens. His name is now connected with everything cruel and ruthless.

Draco's code of laws was dated 621 B.C. It wasn't the first Athenian code of laws ever written, but it may have been the first comprehensive code.

In later times, Solon canceled Draco's code and issued new laws. He left the death penalty for murderers.

The adjective "draconian" comes from the name Draco. "Draconian" means "extremely harsh." Therefore, you can speak of "draconian laws," "draconian punishments," "draconian discipline," "a draconian government," "draconian budget cuts," etc. etc.
