IELTS essay 2. Should criminals have access to education while being at prison? Some people argue that criminals should be allowed to study at prison. It is agreed that following the educational curriculum helps them in a process of rehabilitation. This essay will first discuss the benefits of vocational training and will then cover the importance of managing basic counting and writing skills. Firstly, offering educational activities for prisoners it is possible to enhance the rehabilitative aspects of prison. This is because offenders who spend their days in jails often lack activities. According to a study conducted at the University of Helsinki, especially vocational training benefited offenders and therefore, subject such as woodwork, plumbing and computing should be taught in prison. Not only does training teach them actionable skills, it also offers meaningful activities to be engaged in. Secondly, if prisoners can pursue education while serving their sentences, they would be better prepared for success outside of prison. This is especially important because prisoners are under-educated group compared to the general population. Recent research conducted at the Criminal Institution claimed that two in three prisoners have difficulties in handling everyday task. Many prisoners are schools’ dropouts and have poor counting and writing skills. Therefore, it is crucial to teach them to learn these skills, which are essential when they are freed from the prison. In conclusion, I would argue that providing educational activities benefit prisoners in various ways. Nearly 60 percent of criminals re-commit a crime after being released, and therefore it is crucial to activate them to study and learn vocational skills.
