Please tell me the meaning of "appreciate"
Could you tell me the meaning of "appreciate".
This morning, I talked with my Filipino friend.
When I said, "I appreciate your kindness", He said to me, "do not say appreciate, you will not buy me."
I had thought that "apprecieate" is the synonym of "thank you", but I think it is wrong.
Anyone, could you tell me why did he said above sentence and what situation should I use this word?
I also had used this word when I wrote e- mail. I had thought this was polite expression of thank you...

[Anyone,] Could you/anyone tell me why did he say this/he said [above sentence]/this, and in what situation should I use this word?
I have also [had] used this word when I [wrote]/have written e- mails. I had thought this was a polite expression of thank you...
It seems that your Filipino friend is not familiar with this expression. It is used to express your gratitude for [appreciation of] someone's help or kindness.

Good morning, Mr. Tezza.
Thank you for your explanation. From your comment, I recognized that I could use another nouns if I use this phrase, I appreciate ~." I think I can change degree of appreciations or meaning. If someone help me doing something, I think I could use "I appreciate your cooperation". Would you please another examples by using this expression? I mean, I want to learn nouns which I can fill in ~.

I think "I appreciate your kindness" might be a little too much in that situation. I would use "I appreciate your help" instead.

If that person has done something to assist you and you wish to express gratitude this would be a perfectly acceptable response.
