Tomb Raider (2018) review. Part 2
I’m OK with Lu Ren character, similarities in his and Lara’s past could enrichen the story. And screen writers just didn’t have enough time to squeeze all those characters from the game. We didn’t get to know much about them even in the game due to lack of interaction. But I don’t get why they changed everything about Himiro and cult formed from storm survivals. To me story about normal people driven mad by insufferable circumstances is better than some ancient order of the Bad Guys Who Want To Rule The World. Also Himiko’s magical storms made gamers question themselves: is there actually magic or is it’s just some weather anomaly? Himiko as the sours of disease isn’t that bad, but was presented in a very boring way.
Boring is the word that stuck in my mind and refused to go away from the moment I saw Lara’s father. It was so painfully obvious that he’s going to die tragically in the end of the movie. And to double it up he sacrificed himself for the greater good.
Writers probably been thinking that they raising the stakes, instead Lara lost huge part of control and independency of decision. Whatever she did after meeting Richard was predictable and lacked in personality. It felt like she has no influence on a story anymore. The main conflict anyway was between Richard and Mathias.
The villain is shallow and dull, his game counterpart had way more character and clear motivation. I mean Mathias from Trinity is on island because his boss wouldn’t let him to leave before job is done and Mathias from Solarii Brotherhood battling against goddess of the storm while trying to maintain his sanity and loyalty of his men without mush hope it would ever end.
Majority of action scenes were hard to follow and boring, the only exceptions to this were bike race, crossing of the waterfall and Lara’s first kill. And it’s a film based on game where action scenes were the heart of the whole thing. Not mentioning that game Lara was so good in the battle, some fans called her “more Rambo than Rambo himself”.
Color puzzle in the tomb made me think of game puzzles so much higher. Also movie changed my views on game locations. While playing I thought they need less trash and more ancient ruins, yet brotherhood camps had more story and atmosphere in the details than whole Yamatai from the movie.
Turns out not so strong game plot still beats its opponent. It invokes more emotions, sets more questions and generally more interesting to follow.
