The forgetfulness As the man left the cafe, Maria saw that his phone was still on the table. What could she do? As soon as she realized, she called the man to help him but it was too late. She took the phone and she ran to the the street to look for him. The man had dissappeared. Maria tried to un-lock the phone but she could not, so she thought about put an advertisement in the newspaper. Maria waited for several weeks until that finally she decided to take the phone to the police. When she arrived a police man informed her that the man was looking for his telephone. He was very gratefull and he called Maria to give thanks her for helping him.

As soon as she realized, she called the man to help him, but it was too late. She took the phone and she ran out onto the street to look for him. The man had disappeared. Maria tried to unlock the phone but she couldn't, so she thought about putting an advertisement in the newspaper.
Maria waited for several weeks until finally she decided to take the phone to the police.
When she arrived a police man informed her that the man was looking for his telephone. He was very grateful and he called Maria to give her thanks for helping him.

As soon as she realized this, she called the man to help him to get his attention, but it was too late. She took the phone and she ran into the the street to look for him. The man had disappeared. Maria tried to unlock the phone but she could not, so she thought about putting an advertisement in the newspaper.
Maria waited for several weeks until that , then finally she decided to take the phone to the police.
When she arrived, a police man officer informed her that the man was still looking for his telephone. He was very grateful and he called Maria to thank her for helping him.

With different wording, "a man" would be required

A man entered the cafe. He had a coffee. As the man left, Maria saw ...

In this story, starting with "the man" provides dramatic focus and is natural. A teacher for beginning students would suggest "a man" to reinforce basic grammar whereas a teacher for advanced students would suggest both "a man" and "the man" and then explain the difference.
