To be surprised, Gyaru has a long history. In the late 80’s this word “Gyaru” started to be used. Those days Japan was in the bubble economy period, so girls’ fashion was also changed greatly.

In 90’s many girls liked fashion styles inspired by Japanese famous female singer Namie Amuro which were micro skirt,T-shirt ,platform shoes, blown hair, and thin eyebrows. This was the begging of Gyaru fashion.

In the late 90’s, the new kind of Gyaru called Yamanba which originally means mountain witch appeared.

They baked their skin and got their hair bleached because they wanted to be looked like cool.

In the beginning of 2000, Gyaru makeup was a little bit lighter.

Gyaru in this period tried to be cuter like a princess, so they weared princess-Lolita fashion.

In today Japan, Gyaru fashion is simplified. Even there are Gyaru whose hair are black. However, at the same time there are Gyaru who still keep traditional Gyaru style. So today, Gyaru fashion became diverse.
