It does indeed evoke sadness. I would just point out that the phrase "catch a whiff" doesn't really match the poetic tone of the rest of the text. Perhaps "sense the aroma" or "note the aroma" would be better choices.

Why would the smells of your daily life remind you of something distant? It should be something that ISN’T an everyday smell that reminds you of a different setting. For example, the smell of the ocean reminds you of your vacation at the ocean, or the smell of baking cookies reminds you of when your mom made you cookies etc. You need to be more specific about what you are actually smelling that triggers this connection.
