I belong to a Khasi tribe of Meghalaya, a state in North East India. Our societies in Meghalaya are different from the other communities of India and as well as from the rest of the world because of our unique culture. Meghalaya is inhabited by the three major tribes- Khasi, Jaintia and Garo. The three tribes follow a matrilineal system where the surnames of the children are inherited from the mother and not from the father. I got the surname "Muthoh" from my mother's lineage and not from my father. The property is passed on to the youngest daughter of the family. Nowadays the children are getting equal share even if the youngest daughter is given the highest priority. The youngest daughter has the responsibility to look after the parents, yet even the eldest siblings are playing a major role in taking care of their parents.
In our culture, a man who is married to the youngest daughter has to stay in her house because the youngest daughter has got the responsibility as I have mentioned above. However, there's no restriction for the eldest daughter. She can go and stay in her husband's house after getting married or she can plan with her husband where to stay.
The matrilineal system of the Khasis, Jaintias and Garos is one of the surviving systems in the world. We follow this culture but still the father is the head of the family. I love this culture not because I belong to one of the mentioned tribes but because I value what my ancestors taught. The matrilineal system of Meghalaya is what makes it unique and interesting.
