One track mind? that’s something that comes natural with me. I’ve never been the type of person that can multitask. I’m either working on one project or butchering many others. If I’m doing the laundry let me focus on that. Please don’t ask me to take out the trash. I’m going to get distracted and there will only be one load clean. What does this have to do with language learning? Here’s the thing, I live in a world where my target language isn’t spoken. Whether I am at the supermarket, work, or home. Most people are going to speak to me in my native language. So with all my education in my target language, my environment around me is like gravity forcing me back towards my native tongue. So language learners, it’s a real challenge. We are up against all odds! This is why I mentioned my “one track mind.” Forcing my target language in my daily routine has been that one load of laundry. And I’ve been learning Spanish for 10 years now. I’ve slept with audio playing in the background. I’ve visited “El Mercado,” many times. I’m in the restaurants enjoying Mexican cuisine and also Venezuelan cuisine. All in efforts to immerse myself in the language. And I’m grateful because I’ve reached a level of fluency. Sometimes I understand every word spoken to me. Sometimes I only understand a portion. Sometimes, I read without hesitation in my target language. Sometimes it’s a few words that I need to understand. I often tell people “learning a language is a lifestyle!” It’s not a sprint, it’s an adventure. It’s not about how fast you get there, it’s about enjoying the journey. So take your time and have fun, don’t beat yourself up for time loss. Just pick up where you left off. Resist the gravity! Airplanes were made to do so and we can too with Language Learning. Of course we have to communicate in our native language, but what can we do to propel further into our target language? Keeping this question in forefront of our minds will help to keep making steps forward!
