Are "among" and "amongst " interchangeable ?

They are - amongst is a Middle English form of 'among' - but the former is (unsuccessfully) being phased out by most style guides who recommend the use of 'among' and 'amid' rather than 'amidst' and 'amongst'. However there's no difference in meaning and most people use them interchangeably.
