Is 'panties' usually only used for women, and not men?

In American English, "panties" is only used for women's underwear. The word "pants" means trousers. Men can say "panties" - but they would be talking about a woman's underwear. Men's underwear is called "briefs" or "boxers" - depending on the style.

Panties = women's knickers or underpants. Pants or slacks = women's trousers. Pantihose = women's sheer tights . Footless tights are usually black and worn under long tops or dresses.

Normally, yes. You might use the word as a joke to a man, or perhaps to a boy, but it is normally kept for women and small children:
pant·ie or pant·y (pnt)
n. pl. pant·ies
Short underpants for women or children. Often used in the plural.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Diminutive of pant.] Copied from the Free Dictionary.
-ies and -y are often used as affectionate endings for names and words: dog - doggy, Andrew - Andy and John - Johnny are examples.

Yeah, panties is just for women's underwear... It can either mean a woman's knickers or those nylon stockings they wear under skirts and that:)
I think you might be thinking of teh word "pants", which can either mean "underwear" or "trousers":)
"Pants" as in "trousers" is more often used in the USA, whereas "pants" as in "underwear" is more often used in Britain:) In this case, it can either be used for female or male underwear:)
I hope it was useful:)
Greetings!:)
Ana:)
