Do Turkish people look at Hungarians as brothers? I've heard that because of the Turk past and the similarity of our languages.

This is what I know from my Turkish neighbors. The Hungarians were the sons of the Huns and Magyars the Mongolian tribes who lived in the frontier of Asia and Europe. Attila the Hun, the first Hungarian was a Mongolian , whereas the ancient Turks lived in Central Asia and Mongolia and they were converted to Islam by the Arabs, but their roots are also Mongolian. Turkish and Mongolian languages belong to the same family... Yes there are similarities between Turkish and Hungarian. Kedves Beedee, Most Turks think that Hungarians and Turks have the same ancestors: Huns. Most Turks also view Attila as one of their leaders. Most Turks respect Hungarians and view them as relatives. There are of course ideological differences. To some people "brotherhood" is defined by religion. To some others "brotherhood" is defined by political ideology. So there are groups in Turkiye who would not feel any brotherhood with Hungarians. Also, there are some non-Turkic people in Turkiye such as minorities: Kurds, Armenians, Arabs and so on. They do not share any ethnic and historical bonds with Huns and Turkic or Magyar people, so they would not feel any brotherhood with Hungarians. However, I know many Turks and Hungarians who view each other as brothers or relatives. There are many linguistic, historical and cultural similarities between Turks and Hungarians dating back to Huns. There are also many Turkish-Hungarian friendship associations. I hope this answers your question. Good luck with your Turkish studies.

Hungarians may have greater chances to be "brothers" than, let's say, French people. But to what extent? What Jura said is mainly true, about blood, history, and language...But still I am not sure about her conclusion. Because religion is a very important criterion for Turkish people. For example, I am almost sure that they will prefer Bosnian people or Palestinian people over Hungarians, as "brothers". Maybe you are aware of the conflict between Turkish people and Kurdish people. They have more commonalities than Hungarian people but an important part of the nation does not consider them as "brothers". Instead, they consider them as "enemies". What I have written is a generalization. Of course there are many educated Turks, who consider not only the Hungarians but also every nation to be their brothers...as the way it should be.
